Pillsbury State Forest offers a variety of recreational activities:​

  • Hiking and Biking: Explore the 4.9-mile Pillsbury State Forest Lakes Trail Loop, suitable for moderately challenging hikes and mountain biking. ​

  • Horseback Riding: Enjoy 27 miles of scenic trails designed for horseback riders, with trailer parking available at the Walter E. Stark Horse Assembly Area and the Shafer Lake Day-Use Area. 

  • Fishing and Boating: The forest encompasses several lakes, including Rock Lake, Shafer Lake, and Green Bass Lake, offering opportunities for fishing and boating. Public access points are available for watercraft launch. ​

  • Camping and Picnicking: Facilities like the Rock Lake Campground and Day-Use Area provide picnic spots and camping amenities for visitors.


How far is it from True North?

Pillsbury State Forest is approximately 10 miles northeast of True North, about a 20-minute drive via County Road 77.


When is it open?

The forest is open year-round, with activities varying by season:​

  • Spring and Summer: Ideal for hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and camping.​

  • Fall: The forest showcases vibrant fall colors, making it perfect for scenic drives and photography. 

  • Winter: Cross-country skiing is popular on designated trails. 


How much does it cost?

Access to Pillsbury State Forest is free. However, fees apply for certain activities:​

  • Camping: Overnight camping at designated campgrounds requires a fee. ​

  • Boat Launching: A watercraft launch permit is needed for boating activities. ​

  • Horseback Riding: While trails are free, fees may apply for horse camping facilities. ​
