Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (CCSRA) offers a diverse range of outdoor activities:​

  • Mountain Biking: With over 50 miles of flowing, mixed-difficulty singletrack trails, CCSRA is renowned as one of the premier mountain biking destinations in the United States. ​

  • Paved Trail Cycling: The 8-mile Cuyuna Lakes State Trail provides a scenic route connecting the towns of Crosby and Riverton, suitable for cyclists of all levels. ​

  • Fishing and Boating: The area features 16 clear mine lakes, offering excellent opportunities for fishing and boating enthusiasts.​

  • Hiking: Numerous trails wind through the recreation area, allowing visitors to explore its rich history and natural beauty on foot.​

  • Camping: The Portsmouth Campground, located on the northwest shore of Portsmouth Mine Lake, offers both electric and non-electric sites for tents and RVs.


How far is it from True North?

Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is situated near Crosby and Ironton, MN, approximately 25 miles southeast of Nisswa.


When is it open?

The recreation area is open year-round, with specific hours for certain activities:​

  • Daily: 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM

  • Portsmouth Campground: Open during the spring, summer, and fall seasons; closed in winter. 


How much does it cost?

  • Vehicle Permit: A Minnesota State Park permit is required for parking within CCSRA. Options include a $35 year-round vehicle permit, a $26 additional year-round vehicle permit, a $30 year-round motorcycle permit, or a $7 one-day vehicle permit.

  • Camping Fees: Camping fees vary based on site selection and amenities. It's advisable to check the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website for current rates and reservation information.
